Upgrade to Opera Mini 5
I was pleasantly surprised today when I read in my feed reader that Opera Mini 5 final was released. I decided to update Opera Mini but I was prompted that Opera Mini 5 would replace Opera Mini 4.2. I did not want to lose all my bookmarks and the feeds in Opera Mini 4.2.
So I set up a new My Opera account and synchronized my bookmarks. I also saved the page that displayed the feeds so I could re-subscribe to the feeds in case that was lost. And then I upgraded to Opera Mini 5. I immediately noticed that my bookmarks were already present in Opera Mini 5, and they were sorted in alphabetical order too.
Also there is a feed reader option available in the bookmarks, although it did not keep my previous feeds. I tried to open the saved page I had from Opera Mini 4.2, but I realised that Opera Mini 5 cannot read the saved pages from v4.2
. I read the press release again and it was mentioned there. Grrr why didn’t I read that before. But any way I still have that feeds page saved and most of the feeds are already on Google Reader, so that shouldn’t be a major loss for me.
One super cool thing I’ve noticed is that Opera Mini has also copied all the cookies from the previous version. So the websites that I was signed in to in v4.2 still remember me even after the upgrade.
Also I love the fact that they’ve included a shortcut to go to full screen edit (entering text with the phone editor) so you have T9 just a few keypresses away. Just press Options and select Full Screen Edit when entering text in the on screen text box.
Something I really miss is the ability to jump to the start or bottom of the page by pressing #3. There is also thread started to get votes from users who would like this feature back. Please vote and help up to get this back.
So far so good. I like the new Opera Mini. Although I can’t find a way to keep both versions on my phone, yet. I know it can be done by editing the manifest file but I’ll need a PC for that. Any way I guess I’ll stick to the new version for now.
You’ll find the press release here. To download Opera Mini 5 to your phone visit m.opera.com with the phone browser.

Opera mini 5 cannot read pages saved in Opera mini 4.2 or any version earlier.
I lost about 25 very valuable data stored on the phone.
In the beginning of the upgrade it did ask whether to keep the existing data so that it can be used in this new version, I clicked YES and that’s it!!
IT DOESN’T EVEN HAVE MY BOOKMARKS!!!
DAMMMMMNIT!

The press release states that there is no compatibility between pages from Opera Mini 4 and Opera Mini 5.
If you haven’t deleted the saved pages files, you can switch back to Opera Mini 4.2. Just select other download options on m.opera.com.
Its strange that you don’t have your bookmarks while I do? I recommend you sync bookmarks by loging in to Opera Link before upgrading Opera Mini in the future.

Hey,
That was a quick one.
Anyway, I am just downloading the 4.2 and going to check back the saved pages.
Bookmarks are a gonner!!
Syncing with Opera is the only way to keep the bookmarks?? Nay, they would’ve something better.
BTW, Opera team should solve the bookmarks issue soon.

Thanks.
I’m sure you’ll get the saved pages back. I’m not too sure of the bookmarks though. If you’re extremely lucky, they may reappear on OM4.2, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
Better sync and be safe, than sorry.

What data have you lost?
I guess Opera will release another version soon with the bugs fixed.

I’m also an Opera Mini User, and didn’t know that OM 5 was already released! I’ve been enjoying my OM 4.2 while reading your post, and will surely upgrade mine, too!

I’ve found that this version is too buggy. Especially the bug where the comments or reply disappears insteading of getting posted is just not acceptable.
I’m just using it to browse occasionally for now. I’m back to using 4.2 for regular use. That version is much stable.
